Closing the App Gap; Focus and Momentum https://puri.sm/posts/closing-the-app-gap-momentum-and-time/ Tue, 09 Sep 2025 15:51:50 +0000 https://puri.sm/?p=83717 Purism set extremely ambitious goals starting with its founding as a Social Purpose Company—putting protecting digital rights above profit, putting individual freedom above controlling users, inventing and innovating GNU/Linux for mobile, creating the first truly convergent OS (PureOS), to shipping the first phone with Made in USA Electronics. The constant throughout the entire company is a belief that people should be in control of their technology. This belief is also extremely valuable to organizations and agencies who need the security provided by controlling their devices fully.

The Quiet Revolution: GNU/Linux Crosses 6% Desktop Market Share—And It’s Just the Beginning https://puri.sm/posts/the-quiet-revolution-gnu-linux-crosses-6-desktop-market-share-and-its-just-the-beginning/ Fri, 29 Aug 2025 01:21:31 +0000 https://puri.sm/?p=84000 For decades, the phrase “Year of the Linux Desktop” has been tossed around like a tech industry punchline. But now, it’s no longer a meme—it’s a movement. According to the U.S. government’s own analytics, GNU/Linux has officially crossed the 6% threshold in desktop usage. That’s not hype. That’s hard data.

Instagram’s Mapping Feature: A Privacy Wake-Up Call https://puri.sm/posts/instagrams-mapping-feature-a-privacy-wake-up-call/ Wed, 13 Aug 2025 01:38:59 +0000 https://puri.sm/?p=84003 Instagram’s latest update introduces a mapping feature that quietly turns your location into a public breadcrumb trail. While it may seem like a harmless way to tag your favorite coffee shop or scenic overlook, the reality is more insidious: this feature keeps your location sharing always-on by default. That means every time you post, you’re potentially broadcasting your whereabouts—not just to friends, but to advertisers, data brokers, and anyone else watching. It’s a textbook example of how convenience is weaponized against privacy.

Ethics over Exploits – Use PureOS over Android/iOS https://puri.sm/posts/ethics-over-exploits-use-pureos-over-android-ios/ Wed, 06 Aug 2025 22:07:12 +0000 https://puri.sm/?p=83951 As Purism has been saying for years, the battleground for digital privacy has shifted squarely into our pockets in the form of smartphones. Mobile devices are now (more than ever) the prime targets for sophisticated cyber threats, having a duopoly with centralized control from two vendors; Apple and Google; the problem gets exacerbated.

SharePoint Zero-Day Breach Hits Hundreds of Companies, Affecting Thousands of Users — Why PureOS and Linux Servers Are a Safer Alternative https://puri.sm/posts/sharepoint-zero-day-breach-hits-hundreds-of-companies-affecting-thousands-of-users-why-pureos-and-linux-servers-are-a-safer-alternative/ Mon, 21 Jul 2025 22:10:31 +0000 https://puri.sm/?p=83694 The recent Microsoft SharePoint breach is yet another stark reminder of the systemic vulnerabilities embedded in our overreliance on monolithic tech ecosystems. When you centralize critical infrastructure—especially within sprawling platforms like SharePoint—you create a single, oversized attack surface that adversaries can exploit with devastating precision. This wasn’t just a technical failure; it was a cultural one.

Why the Salt Typhoon Hacks Make Our Public Networks Vulnerable https://puri.sm/posts/why-the-salt-typhoon-hacks-make-our-public-networks-vulnerable/ Sat, 18 Jan 2025 18:39:34 +0000 https://puri.sm/?p=82719 The recent Salt Typhoon hacks by the People's Republic of China (PRC) have exposed significant vulnerabilities in our public networks. These hacks, which targeted major telecommunications providers like Verizon, AT&T, Lumen Technologies, Charter Communications, Consolidated Communications, Windstream, and T-Mobile (although the later says that they prevented access to PII data) have shown just how susceptible our public communication systems are to sophisticated cyber threats. The hackers exploited weaknesses in unencrypted messages and phone calls, allowing them to gain access to sensitive data and even geolocate individuals. The compromise to the public networks may indeed have follow-on repercussions such as muti-factor authentication (MFA) via SMS texts but that is a subject for a future post.
